Holy crap.

We’re tangled up in the bedsheet. My legs are entwined with his, my hair half in my face, half across his. It’s fair to say, my pose is lacking somewhat in elegance. But I’m too exhausted to even care. Maybe it was the wolf part of me, or the vampire part of him, but whatever it was, I am going to have much higher standards in the bedroom department from now on.

We barely slept all night. Every time I felt too exhausted to continue, his fingers or tongue would find another part of my body they hadn’t explored before. Then he would kiss and stroke and lick it in ways I’m fairly sure humans can’t.

The morning sun is breaking through at the edges of the curtains, bringing with it the dawn chorus, equally as loud as London traffic. Calin shifts into the shade. Even without turning to him, I can tell he’s looking at me. Last night, I didn’t think once about how I looked. It never crossed my mind. (There were a lot of other things going on.) But I'm now aware there's a filament of drool extending between me and my pillow, and I suddenly feel very self-conscious.

“It’s unfair,” I say, brushing the hair off my face. “You don’t even sweat. You look the same as always.”

“You still look good.” He moves a stray hair out of my eyes before running his finger across my collar bone. I stiffen.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. It’s just …”

He sits up.

“Just what?”

The relaxed feeling I had earlier is ebbing away and tension is taking its place. It’s not that I don’t enjoy lying here. I definitely do. But that’s the problem. I don’t normally stick around for this bit. This is when it’s all too easy to slip up and say something stupid or end up agreeing to things like dates or relationships or possibly admitting to feelings you weren’t even sure were there in the first place. I clear my throat and sit up as well.

“Why don’t you have your bottom fangs?” I ask, shifting the conversation away from me. “It’s to do with the Blood Pact, right?”

He pauses, as if he wants to say something else, wants to return to my earlier response but then flops back down onto the bed.

“Yes, it’s part of the Blood Pact.”

“As a sign? So you can see who has agreed to it?”

“Partially. The bottom fangs also contain venom.”

“Like in your nails?”

“Not the same but similar.”

I can’t help but think that for bodies which are essentially dead, they sure as hell do a lot. Fangs, two types of venom. It’s amazing what nature can achieve when it stops having to keep you alive.

“What does this venom do?” I ask.

“It’s what we need to turn humans.”

“As in turn them into vampires?”

“Exactly.”

I feel my eyebrows rise. Until the discussion with Freya and Chrissie on our first night, I’d never really considered whether Calin had the power to turn me. It’s certainly never worried me, but I feel it must be a huge part of a vampire’s identity.
